The canals leading to Anping Harbour were developed to facilitate sea trade with Fujian province by the Qing authorities. Along with warehouses, fish markets, and the usual port-side establishments, many temples important to seafarers also graced the area. They spawned homes, businesses and places of worship, and became Tainan's most prosperous area. Geographically, the five manmade canals were sprawled like the fingers of a hand from west to east. Near Minquan Rd 3rd section and Linan Rd, they merged into a single canal that made its way west to the sea between Anping Fort and Eternal Golden Castle.
